Working Principle of 7805 Module

The main component of this regulated power supply module circuit is a positive voltage regulator IC called 7805. The 7805 is a monolithic integrated circuit designed to provide a fixed voltage output of 5V. Its working principle is based on regulating the input voltage and maintaining a constant 5V output voltage.

When the circuit receives an input voltage of 7.5-24V and 1A DC or AC, it passes through a diode bridge rectifier to convert it to DC. The resulting unregulated DC voltage is then smoothed and filtered by a capacitor (C1), which is indicated by an LED (D5).

Next, the voltage regulator IC (U1) regulates the unregulated DC voltage to a constant +5V DC output. Any extra voltage is dissipated as heat, so it's recommended to use a suitable aluminum heat sink.

Capacitors C2 and C3 are used for additional smoothing and filtering, and to reduce ripple noise from the regulated supply output. As a result, this power supply circuit provides a 5V 1A DC output.

Additionally, connector J1 is connected to the output in parallel to power any 5V electronic modules through jumper wires.

Application of 7805 Module

  • Constant +5V output regulator for powering microcontrollers and sensors in most projects
  • Charging modules (such as the TP4056 module)
  • Audio amplifier modules (such as the GF1002 module)
